I am super excited for my first baby shower on July 19 hosted by my sister in law. We registered for our bigger items at the Lullabye Shop in Appleton (where I'm from) and the rest at Target but I've been thinking about the other "essential" items that I want to have before baby comes.
A camcorder is a biggie! Is is easier to get one that records on memory cards/sticks instead of tapes? I will want to do editing so it has to come with software for that. I also would like to stay in the $300 range or so. Any suggestions? I assume you can't go wrong with Sony anything for video. We use Sony professional HD cams for our online videos here.
What are the other must-haves? I know I haven't thought about gadgets to save me time or inconvenience. What can't you live without in your nursery or your home?
Carrie
p.s. Baby is very active now and I love feeling it!

One "must have" in my book is a rocking chair. Buy the most comfy one you can find, and be willing to pay for it...it will be the best money ever spent!!!!!! I couldnt live without mine. Especially if you are nursing, you will spend ALOT of time in it, trust me it will be worth every penny!

Must haves...its been a while, but...a GOOD breast pump if you are nursing (we had the Medela) and it will save your sanity to have a good one....double pump. They are pricey, but worth it. The side snap t-shirts are a must for newborns I think and are under-rated by many, but this also will make your life easier. when we got our glider/rocker...I didn't get the ottoman with it and wished I would have.

I can not believe people were able to raise children before the Boppy pillow. This was one of the best things I got for my baby shower.

I have a mei tei that I still carry my 16 month old in. It was great when he was little-I carried him in front, now that he is bigger, I carry him on my back with no pain!! We don't leave the house without it

Onesies. They're like a t-shirt body suit for the baby. Really wonderful in the winter. No cold tumies. Lots of burb rags for your shoulder. Trust me on that one. Use to have a Kanga-rock-a-roo. Awesome. And a swing for when baby is a bit older. They're a life saver.

What you DON'T need is a Diaper Genie! What a waste....there are enough other expenses with new baby and needed items without needed some special little bags that just go in the trash. A regular ol diaper pail will do just fine. Just my opinion.
FAVORITE shampoo and baby wash....Aveeno! Pricey, but worth it.

I just registered for a plain diaper disposal that doesn't require special bags- thought the same thing!
I will get some kind of wrap to carry baby. Never heard of a mei tei- thought was a tasty cocktail!
I have boppy on the registry too- heard good things about it.
As for breast pumps, I had no idea which was best but automatic has to be better than manual I assume? I'm a bit scared to really try one!

The Avent double breast pump is awesome-I would highly recommend. Definitely go electric rather than manual, unless you don't plan to pump much at all. A swing and some kind of exersaucer/stationary walker are great when you need to put baby down for a few minutes to get some stuff done. Also, a bouncer is nice for small babies-most love them. I would recommend some nice, large receiving blankets. Not the kind that you buy at target that come in a 4 or 5 pack because they're way too small for a good swaddle. You might have to shop around for them online, but they're great.

I agree on the Boppy. There are so many uses for it. My 7 1/2 month old daughter still uses hers for support and bottle feeding. One thing that I didn't see on mentioned on here, which I couldn't live without is a baby monitor (with 2 receivers)! Mine were AC or battery. It's nice to keep one in our bedroom, and one to carry around while baby sleeps. Good Luck! Oh you won't need this so much right away, but bibs are absolutley essential when baby starts drooling and playing by him/herself. I went through about 8 a day at the very least!
Hope this helps!!

WOW...everything I LOVED has been mentioned! The Diaper Champ is what I had and LOVED!!! No special bags required and didn't smell at all!!! I liked the wipe warmer..but probably not necessary! Definitely the Medela pump and bobby are the other must haves in my book!

Receiving Blankets. I never really used them to wrap my babies up in because to be honest most were way to small. They do make great burp cloths though. Especially if you have a spitter uppers like mine were. You never know which direction the spit will fly.

I did not buy a Medela breast pump, but got one of those First Step ones ($60 at Target.) One, I could not afford the $250-300 Medela and 2, I liked that my pump could be used with just ONE HAND. I could read while pumping which makes it go so much faster than just holding your... you know, and staring at a wall. The First Steps brand generally does not review well because it has the option to make the pressure too much (just don't turn the dial way up) and it doesn't cycle as fast as the Medela to help you let down (I just pumped when I would feel the need or when I normally would.) Hope this helps!

Batteries to run all the baby stuff, and toys. As simple as it seems you're gonna NEED those. Bibs without Velcro. we recieved a digital picture scrapbook- for all the CDs of pictures. It's nice to have backups in case of a computer failure.

I work in a baby room at a daycare, and we go through plenty of bibs(we dont like the vinyl backed ones, they crack after a few washes) and cloth diapers we use for burp rags.
Jumpers are awesome for older(5 months and up) babies, Bumbo chairs are life savers for babies who love to be upright. We used our swing at home almost from day one. And the overhead gyms they can lay down and play with.

I love my Medela (pump in style advanced). Depends on your needs though. I pumped after I went back to work for several months, and there's no way I could have done that with a single sided pump.
I agree with the diaper genie being a waste. I never opened mine..and now we're on baby #2. We just use the trash can. With two kids in diapers, we empty the trash before it starts to stink anyways.
